Grid-based 400+ MSX models overview for quick comparisons
I have made a handy utility for developers: a grid-based overview tool with all known MSX models listed on the msx.org wiki pages as well as those emulated in openmsx. Totalling of 426 models at the time of this writing (including localized variants).
Background: As an MSX developer you often need to know which, or how many models support feature x,y,z. Even if a feature works on your current model, it does not mean that it works on other MSXes. Thus, you need to handle this in your code, or just use the fact for planning compatibility of your title. Like "if I want to utilize a Memory Mapper, how many models support it?"
A selected list of specs or characteristics I've made clear in this tool
- VRAM size: Most MSX2s have 128kB, but the MSX2 standard only require 64kB, so be aware that a few models only have 64kB.
- Non-linear RAM: This have tricked many programmers before - RAM is spread across multiple slots.
- Memory Mapper (MSX2 and up): Be careful when requiring this for your MSX2 title, as many popular MSX2 models does not have this built-in (and will require an external memory mapper).
- HIMEM address: Another gotcha. This is where the stack is located, and it may surprise many developers that this value differs from 0xF380 for many titles.
- VDP wait cycles: It turns out that some models end up having a slower VDP than normal or expected and the programmer should be aware as this can slow down your framerate.
- PSG chip: Not a biggie for most, but the SSG handles volume fades and hardware envelope effects sound noticeably smoother.
- CPU clock: We see that a few models have a slightly reduced clock speed. If you show a frame-based video (like in Go Figure) which is exactly 4:00 minutes, it will take 4:01.68 on the slow machine. This may or may not affect you music sync, depending on how your music is timed.
- NMOS/CMOS: This difference will give you different effect when you use the undocumented instruction OUT (C),0 (and a few others).
- RTC (clock): The MSX2 specification states RTC is a requirement, yet we can see that the Daewoo CPC-300E clearly does not have one!
Features worth mentioning
- Customize the view (hide/show rows, columns or collapse parts).
- Sort and filter columns.
- Select cells as in Excel.
- Copy selection to clipboard.
- Share the current view and selection by a URL.
- Links to more information at msx.org, generation-msx and openmsx.
- Often extra information provided in the tooltips.
- Slotmaps:
- In cell for quick view and comparisons.
- Hover over for large view with extra information in tooltips.
- In a set of columns for filter by columns or just search.
- The tool has a scraper and parser which can be rerun by admin at multiple times to update the grid with the latest from msx.org and openmsx.
The tool will be updated with new information if I find it worthwhile.
